What the hell is Moose?

Moose is a free utility to help manage your MP3 files.

Moose is like lots of other MP3 file managers, it allows you to edit the ID3 tags held in the MP3 file. However unlike most other MP3 managers it can also separate your MP3s out into \Artist\Album folders!

Moose is ideal for those iTunes power users that don't want iTunes to auto manage their collections. Moose gives you the power to control your precious MP3 library!

Moose is constantly in development so feel free to request new features. We'll do our best to add requested features...

What can Moose do?

Intelligent Cataloguing
The ideal setup for a media library is to have your MP3 files stored in a <root>\<artist>\<album> folder structure, for example c:\music\The Beatles\Abbey Road. Often people have a single folder with all their MP3s dumped into it. This is OK when you have a tiny MP3 library but can cause real chaos when trying to manage a larger catalogue successfully. This is where Intelligent Cataloguing comes in! With Intelligent Cataloguing you can point Moose at an input (unsorted) folder and tell it to automatically sort the MP3 out in artist/album folders based upon the ID3 tag information stored in the MP3 file.

Various Arists (Compilation albums) Support
Moose handles Various Artist (VA) albums with ease. Moose automatically detects VA albums and will NOT sort the individual files into Artist folder but move the entire album to a Various Artists\Album folder.

Auto DJ
Auto DJ is a handy function that can automatically select a set size of random MP3s from your collection and copy them to a specificed folder. Imagine you had a 8 gig MP3 player and a 100 gig MP3 collection. The Auto DJ function can select 8 gigs worth of random MP3s and copy them to a folder ready to move to your MP3 player. This means that you can have a new random selection of music whenever you like!

MP3 ID3 Tag Editing
To make the most of your music collection it's highly recommended to ensure that the MP3 files have the correct ID3 tag information. Moose can help you do this. Moose can parse the MP3 file name and update the tags based upon the file name. For example if a MP3 file is named 01 - The Beatles - Abbey Road - Come Together.mp3, Moose can extra the track number, artist, album and track name from the file name and update the ID3 tag for you. Moose also allows you to bulk edit the ID3 tags in MP3 files.

MP3 File Renaming
Often MP3 players show the current playing MP3 b ased upon the MP3 file name. This is not great if the file name is something screwy or badly formed. Moose can rename the MP3 file based upon the ID3 tag infomation thus creating well formed file names

Media Player
Moose has Windows Media Player built in so you can easily play selected MP3 in a playlist without needing to use another player. This is very handy if you want to quickly listen to a MP3 to check it whilst performing maintainance of your music collection. Supports visualisations too.
